5 things you need to know about Venice

118 small islands, located on a marshy lagoon and linked by bridges make the idyllic, beautiful and romantic city of Venice in north eastern Italy. The Venetian Lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouth of River Po and River Piave giving Venice a postcard-like background that makes all its guest fall in love with the city. Renowned for its setting, architecture and artworks; Venice and the entire lagoon is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Here are some more things you need to know about the city.

1. The city is best viewed from any of the bridges on the Grand Canal during Sunset - I know some will disagree - but i find this spots to be the most romantic. They give you a sweeping view of the city and also present you with the most ideal lighting to capture the image of the city on your camera.

2. Due to its beauty, Venice is the city with the most nicknames. It has been invariably been called; "La Dominante", "Serenissima", "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Masks", "City of Bridges", "The Floating City", and "City of Canals". The New York Times went ahead and summarized it as 'undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man'.

3. Getting lost in Venice is the order of the day. The streets are very confusing and no amount of well-marked maps can stop you getting lost...but therein lays the charm of Venice. Getting lost in a beautiful city is one of the most interesting adventures one can have.

4. If you know your symphonic and operatic music, you would know that Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice. This and many other composers gave Venice an early lead in classy entertainment. Trust me; any theater you visit in Venice will give better quality than you can have anywhere else in the world.

5. I would you a disservice if I don't point out the most popular attractions in Venice, so here you go: Piazza San Marco, The Grand Canal, Saint Mark's Basilica, doge's Palace, Rialto Bridge, Murano, Bridge of Sighs, Lido de Venezia, Santa Maria Della Salute and many more.

There you have it - the old, romantic and most beautiful of all cities. Put it in your bucket list if you haven't visited it!
