5 things you need to know about Trieste

Trieste is a tourist city that is located in northern Italy on a narrow Italian territory strip that lies between Adriatic Sea and Slovenia. By virtue of being on the head of the Gulf of Trieste, the city has been influenced by three European cultures that include; Latin, Slavic, and Germanic cultures. The city of Trieste is the capital of the autonomous region of Friuli Venezia Giulia as well as Trieste province. 1. History

The Austro-Hungarian Empire of Vienna, Budapest, and Prague viewed Trieste city as their most important Mediterranean Seaport in the 19th century. In fact, they viewed it as their most prized possession due to its proximity to the key shipping route of the Mediterranean. Trieste was a major contention between the Eastern and Western blocs after the Second World War. Today, it is one of the richest cities of Italy with shipping, ship building and financial services being the main sources of revenue.

2. Climate

For those that are intent on visiting the city, you need to know that the city is characterized by warm humid subtropical climate with some influences of the Mediterranean depending on the distance from the sea. The city is best visited during the months of May, June, July, August and September. The average temperature during this time is 19 degrees Celsius.

Among the most popular tourist attractions includes; Miramar Castle, Castle of San Giusto, St. Justus Cathedral, Serbian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity and St. Spyridon, Synagogue of Trieste, Temple of Monte Grisa, Arch of Riccardo, Roman Age Temples, Roman theatre, Grotta Gigante and many more. As a tourist, you will never fall short of places to explore in Trieste.

4. Getting Around

The city has all the means of transport available to tourists. The Port of Trieste serves as the main exit for the landlocked countries such as Slovenia. The city has a rail network that traverses over 1,400 kilometers either direction. The city also operates the Opicina Tramway, a hybrid between tramway and funicular railway for easier connections to the city districts. Buses, Taxis and boats are also widely used in the city of Trieste. International travellers are well advised to use Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport which has international flights running on schedule.

The city of Trieste has hosted international meetings and events such as
i. Italo-Russian Bilateral Summit in 2013 (Letta-Putin)
ii. The Italo-German Bilateral Summit in 2008 (Berlusconi-Merkel)
iii. The G8 meetings of Foreign Affairs and Environment Ministers respectively in 2009 and 2001.
