5 things you need to know about Naples

Naples or 'Napoli' in Italian is the capital of the Italian region of Campania and the third largest municipality in Italy after Rome and Milan. This post is meant to give you an overview of Naples, one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Check out the list below.

1. It is one of the oldest European Settlement

The first records of settlement in Naples date as far back as Bronze Age Greek settlements that were established in the Naples area in the second millennium BC. The city was formerly founded as Neapolis in the 6th century BC.

2. It served as a major cultural center for the Roman Empire

The city, after being occupied by the Greeks immediately after the Greek Dark Ages, became the launching pad of Greek culture to the Roman Republic. The city remained an important center of the Western Roman Empire serving as the capital of the Kingdom of Naples between 1282 and 1816.

3. Naples’ Attractions

Among the most popular points of interest in Naples include; Vanderbilt Beach, Naples Museum of Art, Collier-Seminole State Park, Naples Zoo, Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park, Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, Palm Cottage, Naples Botanical Gardens etc.

4. The Port of Naples has the second highest passenger traffic after the Port of Hong Kong. Among other international bodies that the city hosts is the NATO's Allied Joint Force Command Naples, the SRM Institution for Economic Research and the OPE Company and Study Centre.

5. It is a World Heritage Site

Naples' historic city center is the largest in Europe. It covers 1,700-hectares (4,200-acres) and encloses 27 centuries of history. The city center is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Naples is certainly a must visit city for those on a European tour. From the Januarius, the patron saint of Naples, to the comic figure Pulcinella and the Sirens from the Greek epic poem the Odyssey; visitors will be treated to the best of Napoli Hospitality. Oh... and don't forget to grace San Paolo Stadium in the south of the city. It is home to two time Italian football champions, the S.S.C. Napoli.
